Handmade Minnie Party

Hot Dog! We had a party and you’re all invited!

We celebrated with Minnie, but all these ideas could easily be changed to fit any theme. I fell in love with the red polka dots and minnie ears and used them on everything.

Including the cake!
We have ears, say cheers!
These party hats aren’t just fun to make, they’re also easy and inexpensive.
A birthday outfit is a small touch that can make anyone feel extra special. Kate cried when it was pried off to go in the wash.
What party is complete without a pinata? All I needed was a Huggies box, a
roll of crepe paper, tape and glue. No messy paper-mache or waiting
days for it to dry.

Mouse hands were made for the kids to wear while hitting the pinata. Such Joy! Of course we needed goodie bags for all the loot. It was a great party, thanks for coming!

Perfect Swim Bag

*Project by Shannon @ Shannon Makes Stuff*

First off I would like to send a big thank you to those followers who voted me on to the finals! It means allot to me! And I also couldn’t be competing against a more creative gal!!! It’s been a fun, fast, and tough ten weeks!

For my final shebang I decided to create the perfect bag to take with your family swimming! Whether you head to the local pool or out to the beach, you will have enough room for everything! With summer in full swing around my parts of the country and with it around the corner for the rest I thought it would be perfect to pull out bright summer colors and prints.

So here you have the PERFECT SWIMMING and recreational bag!

The top of the bag has two separate sides. They both close and open with draw string tops.

One side is fully lined with waterproof material so once you are done swimming you can toss in your wet clothes, and the rest of your bag will stay nice and dry!

The other side is a dry side. It is filled with pockets that you can slide in your wallet, keys, makeup, or diapers! You name it! It’s perfect for your hair supplies and your dry change of clothes for after you swim!

Now onto the bottom. The entire bottom is waterproof, so you won’t need to worry where you set your bag! Two of the sides around the bottom have pockets to slide in water bottles! You can never have enough water at the pool! They are also perfect for slipping in sun screen or diving toys, or flip-flops!

On one of the other sides there are three pockets that have flaps on the top. They are perfect for goggles, sun glasses, or spray on tanner!

The final side around the bottom has a large flap that opens completely and closes with Velcro, making it easy for children to get in and out of.

When you open the flap you will find another waterproof compartment large enough to fit 6, yes 6, large beach towels, folded nice and neat!

So grab all your swim gear, change of clothes, and load up your bag. Throw it over your shoulder and head out for a fun filled day!

When your ready to go home, the top of your bag won’t be as filled because your change of clothes will be on, so simply push down the draw string compartments, throw your smaller bag over your shoulder, and head home!
This bag is also perfect for a small camping trip, or a couple of days in a row overnighter! Slide your sleeping blanket and pillow into the bottom and fill up the dry side with your clothes! Once you wear your clothes, simply put them in the waterproff side, to keep your dirty clothes seperated! All the pockets in the insides can be used for your bathroom supplies! So where ever you are headed this summer, grab the PERFECT BAG and GO!

Shine Through The Rain Necklace

*Project by Emily @ iCreate With Love*

I wanted to come up with a cute necklace out of felt that symbolized one of my favorite things. Not only do I love rainstorms, but they are even better when it’s sunny out! I also the meaning that shining through the rain holds for myself. I love how this necklace turned out and I love that it means something to me too!

Jewelry – Week 8

Craft #1 – Upcycled Bracelets

I bought this handbag at the thrift store a while back. I loved the color. The shape of the bag wasn’t my style, but I knew I could do something else with it.

These are my creations.

Other than the bag the only supplies I needed were a few beads, a needle and thread.

My favorite thing about repurposing things is that most of the hard work is done for you. I was able to use parts that were already finished at the edges making my job easier.

Now I just have to decide which one to keep and which to give away.

Craft #2 – Shine Through The Rain Necklace

I wanted to come up with a cute necklace out of felt that symbolized one of my favorite things. Not only do I love rainstorms, but they are even better when it’s sunny out! I also the meaning that shining through the rain holds for myself. I love how this necklace turned out and I love that it means something to me too!

Craft #3 – Fabric Scrap Bracelet

Upcycled. Recycled. Multi-Functional. Big. Bold. Beautiful. That’s what it’s all about. With Jewelry these days anything goes. I took an old belt and some fabric scraps and created a stunning bracelet.

The best part is that the flowers are detachable. You can exchange them in and out with many many others that I will show you how to create in the winning tutorial.
It doesn’t stop there. Take the flower off of the bracelet and add it to your favorite ball chain to create an elegant necklace. Or take that flower and add it to a hair elastic to create pony tail jewelry. Or take the flower and add it to your favorite headband for a gorgeous hair jewelry piece.
It’s amazing what you can create with items you have around the house. And with my interchangeable bracelet creation and scrap flower the possibilities are endless. At least 4 jewelry pieces in one!

Home Decor – Week 7

Craft #1 – Switch It Up Pillow

Which pillow to choose?
Ever asked yourself that same question?
The ‘Switch It Up’ Pillow gives you several different looks….. so your home can have it all this year.

The pillow features several ‘panels’ that can be interchanged, as fast as your mood changes.

Store the additional ‘panels’ in the zipper compartment in the back.

Take one out, and attach it to the front.

The front has been stitched with the word “SPRINGTIME”

Now you can have the fun ‘Switch It Up’ pillow too. My Panels include a flower, a bumble bee (with a ‘flappy’ wing) and an Easter egg. You can use my patterns or make your own panels for your pillow. Your sure to make a statement with your original pillow.

Craft #2 – Family Tree

I have been wanting a family tree in my home for quite some time! So this was a perfect opportunity for me to create one! I decided to put it in our play room so my children can see it often.
Using fabric was the perfect choice because it is really soft to the touch, visually stunning, and is extremely durable against active kids.
The rolled metal photo frames are small and light weight so they will not be knocked off or broken. And the shine really catches your eye and accentuates the photo’s!

The frames can be hand stamped with tiny letters with the relation of the person on the front so your children can be constantly reminded of who is who.

And the best part is that as your family grows your tree can grow too, just add another frame or two!

Craft #3 -Etched Glass Window

I have a lot of short windows in my home. The kind that are awkward to hang curtains from. Not that I would want curtains anyways. I love having a lot of light. The problem is that I live in the city where all the homes are really close together. I don’t love looking out my windows and straight into my neighbors. I needed something that could give us privacy, but didn’t block the light.

I’ve been looking at stained glass for a while, it’s not in the budget and I was having trouble finding the right colors. That is how I came up this etched window. Using a store bought frame and etching gel I have the perfect window coving for all my trouble spots.

It works great above our coat rack, a place where curtains obviously wouldn’t work.

I love how it hides the ugly view of the apartments next door.

Craft #4 – Argyle Pillows

Who doesn’t love argyle? And if it’s in felt…WOW! I just love pillows and I’m always trying to come up with new and funky pillow designs for my home. I love to embellish them with felt because they look so soft! This pillow came to me one night while I was sleeping and I had so much fun making them! The back of the pillow is envelope style so that you can take them off and change them out to fit your mood!

It will look great on your couch…

or on a shelf…

my kids love them too…

Retro – Week 4

Craft #1 – Toothbrush RugJenny

I have always loved the look of toothbrush rugs, so I was excited to make one for “retro week.”

They add a unique feel to a room and feel wonderful on your feet because they’re extra squishy.

I used one of my favorite color combos (aqua and red) to create a fresh version of a traditional craft.

Toothbrush rugs are simple to make and require no sewing machine. One would look great in a kitchen, bathroom, or entry way. Constructing a rug is a super way to use fabric scraps you aren’t sure what to do with!

Craft #2 – UFO LampKim

“Retro” can mean different things to different people. For me, it means mid-century modern with a dash of kitsch, and alien space ships are definitely kitsch! This UFO light fixture is perfect for a little boy’s room. And the best part is that it’s made from simple materials — plastic lanyard lacing and stainless steel vegetable steamers.

The entire thing was a snap to make. I used a few basic tools to replace the glass shade on a standard halogen pendant with my UFO lampshade. Then I added the lanyard to make the ship look like it was spinning through the air.

And when you turn out the lights, you’ll discover that the lamp holds one last surprise. Yes, it glows in the dark! What could be more fun for a kid’s room?

Craft #3 – Vinyl in FeltEmily

What’s more retro than vinyl records?? Being a music lover, I love vinyl records!! If I could collect them all and play them all the time I would! And what’s better than having a bit of vinyl in my favorite fabric…felt! These vinyl record coasters were so fun and easy to make. They’ll look so cute and they make great gifts for the music lover!

Just take a look at the detail, textured just like a real record!

Craft #4 – The Gidget DressKristin

Perfect for friends…..

Perfect for playing…..

Perfect for hugging…..

The Gidget dress is easy enough for a beginner. Made from linen, it lightly flows and is the perfect breathable fabric for spring and summer!

And as long as you are making one dress, you may as well make three so all the friends can match!

Made from a simple a-line dress. I will show you how I designed and made these simple dresses using clothes you own as a pattern OR by cutting up a cheap pattern to re-design your own.

These dresses have coordinating fabric buttons on the front (which I made with the linen from the dress). This dress also has a simple button down back that DOESN’T use button holes…So if you have been intimidated by button holes, there is no excuse to not make your own Gidget dress!

Craft #5 – Record PurseShannon

RETRO means something different for everyone. The items you categorize as RETRO will depend on the era you grew up in. When I think RETRO I think orange, olive green, and brick red, bold prints, shag carpet, records, huge ear phones, one piece jumpsuits, macrame, etc…

I have combined several of the items I consider to be RETRO to create…
a RECORD PURSE.
Not only having a new purse, (which we all LOVE) and helping the environment, (by saving records from the landfill) you can be a conversation starter! Everyone will want to know where you got yours from. And of course they’ll want one for themselves.
Up the sides I used a RETRO technique, macrame knots, to hold the records in place and add a pop of print. The fabric I chose combined the colors I consider to be RETRO (gold, brick red, olive green, and rust) and of course the print is Paisley.
I lined the inside of the purse with more brick red fabric. I included two small peek pockets for chap stick, gum, keys, and your cell phone. There is two large pockets for magazines or bills. And then the main pocket for your wallet, pens, and other purse contents. I finished off the strap with the same color and a big decorative macrame knot.
So poof that hair, stuff that purse full, and take the trolley into town…
You never know who you might run into or what might happen when you are carrying a RETRO RECORD PURSE!

Craft #6 – Flower Child DressKalleen

Who knew looking back would look so good. This flower child dress will change the way you think about the 70′s.

I raided my grandma’s sewing cupboard to find the perfect retro fabric and inspiring dress patterns. Once I got past some of her stuff that is old and outdated I found this floral silk. It’s 40 years old but still bold and fresh.

Of course I couldn’t stop with just a dress. This flower child needed some new shoes and a wide headband to complete her look.

Now I am just wishing the remnant was big enough to make me one.

Craft #7 – Retro Magnetic BoardSarah

I had a lot of fun going all out (or maybe… overboard!?) with the retro theme this week! I used both retro materials and retro techniques to create this magnetic board.

My Retro Materials: The board itself is actually an old tin ceiling tile that was salvaged and spray painted white. My grandmother gave me some old quilting squares that she got in the Florida Keys ages ago, and I’ve been saving them for the perfect project. Sometimes it’s hard to use fabric you love so dearly, but when it turns into something this beautiful it’s a little easier! My Retro Techniques: I’m not much of a quilter, but since this was just a teeny project, I decided to tackle it. After quilting the squares together I used one of the oldest crafting techniques there is… decoupage! This step was a little tricky, but in a winning tutorial I’ll share all my secrets!

For the Kitchen – Week 3

Craft #1 – Kitchen on the GoSarah @ Create Studio

Sometimes having a meal in our own kitchen doesn’t fit in the schedule. For those times we need a kitchen on the go! After much research, I created a food-safe reusable sandwich bag and a snack bag that is perfect for eating out.

I discovered that many types of oil cloths and plastic-lined fabrics allow harmful chemicals to seep into the food. I made these bags using freezer-safe gallon sized ziplock bags as the liner. To wash, just turn them inside out and rinse!

They close just like the old sandwich bags pre zip-lock. With these bags, you’ll be saving money and sticking to your eating goals in style even when you can’t eat at home!

Craft #2 – The Sophisticated PlacematEmily @ Skrpbook Mom’s Diary

As a mom of young kids, I often ask them to set the table for me while I’m making dinner and it never fails that they wonder where to place everything. I have seen placemats for kids to help them put the utensils etc. in the right places, but they aren’t really something that fits my style. That’s how I came up with this beautiful placemat…sophisticated enough to leave out on your table all the time!

The top of the placemat is muslin and the bottom side is cotton fabric…so that it can match with whatever decor you have in your kitchen. The outlines of the dishes are done with free hand stitching, twice over for that semi-messy look.

Now you can ask your child to set the table or if you’re like me and always forgetting which side the fork goes on, this placemat will help out and be sophisticated at the same time!

Craft #3 – Menu BoardJenny @ jennygarland.com

I try to stay on top of menu planning so I can steer clear of the 4pm “What in the world are we going to have for dinner??” panic! And it’s a great way to save money.

Before I made this magnetic menu planning craft, I simply wrote what we were going to eat for the week on a piece of notebook paper. Not cute. And one of the kids would grab it and suddenly our “menu” was MIA!

The menu planning board I made utilizes Scrabble tiles for the days of the week:

It has plenty of space to write your meal plans or use a magnet to attach a recipe you intend to use.

Interchangeably, you could use this project to write your weekly grocery list:

All of the pieces are magnetic and easily removable! This project looks great hanging on the refrigerator or sitting on an easel.

Craft #4 – Reusable Lunch Bags
Kristin @ Pea Pod Creations

Pack up some kitchen lovin’ with these reusable lunch bags, complete with matching reusable snack and sandwich bags.

Pick out lining to reflect who each bag belongs too. The reusable bags co-ordinate too, and are lined (with a ‘plastic’ like feel) so that they can be wiped clean. There is even a spot for your napkin and silverware to go.

Send them to school or pack them up for the park, just make sure you have your lunch bag packed and ready to go!

Craft #5 – Personalized Face PlatesKalleen @ At Second Street

I wanted to create something fun for the kitchen. Something to make mealtime more enjoyable for everyone. Something that would replace crying and threatening with laughter and smiles. These Personalized Face Plates did just the trick.

I’ve been wanting a ” Food Face” for a long time. But, I didn’t want a mass-produced plate, I wanted something personalized. I thought it would be more fun to dress and eat from the faces we already know and love.

Grandpa’s face is especially special since we lost him to cancer a few years ago.

My kids have shown everyone who enters the door their new toys and talk about who’s face they want to eat next.

Craft #6 – Flower Napkin RingsLinda @ Craftaholics Anonymous

For the Kitchen, I made Napkin Rings from a couple old belts that I don’t wear anymore. I thought they’d make some killer napkin rings….. and be a cool repurposing project at the same time. The hubs was a little worried, at first, when he saw me holding my belts with scissors in hand. I don’t blame him! I was a little nervous about ripping apart perfectly good belts, but man, these Napkin Rings turned out awesome!

The Flower Napkin rings are my favorite out of the different sets I made. The cute pink and green flowers are perfect for Spring! {And the romantic dinner the hubs and I had the other night….}

Using belts to make napkin rings was SO easy! I used things I had around the house and so it cost me nothing to make these beauties. Don’t ya just love a good repurpoing project that doesn’t cost a dime :)

Top: a few other napkin ring sets I made. Bottom: the Flower Napkin rings came from this fabulous belt.
Now I have some cool buckles to use for other projects. wahoo!

Craft #7 – Recipe Organizer
Shannon @ Shannon Makes Stuff

The Kitchen is NOT my favorite room in my home. And the worst part of my day is cooking. I don’t like deciding what to cook for the week and once I do and get the groceries by the time the end of the week comes I have forgotten what recipes I have the supplies to make. So I decided to create a place to put my weeks worth of chosen recipes!

You simply hang this over your pantry door or your cupboard door. It adds some fun to your kitchen as well as organizing those recipes you have picked out to use.

The front of the pantry door or cupboard will look like this:

Underneath that snazzy flower is a clip to hang the current recipe you are creating from so the card doesn’t get food all over it during the cooking process. And during the day you can hang notes or your apron from it!
The inside of the pantry door or cupboard will look like this:

Seven clips with your recipes attached. I started from Monday to Sunday because I shop on Monday and that’s the start of a new selection of recipes!
This ‘Weekly Recipe Organizer’ is a Great way to keep you in the Kitchen and out of the Drive- Through! Because simply planning a week worth of recipes is the hardest part! And what’s better than a little pop to your kitchen?

Craft #8 – Modern Dish Towel
Kim @ The Sassy Crafter

One of my philosophies in life is to elevate the everyday to the extraordinary whenever possible. Take dish towels, for example. I’ve been known to splurge and spend $15 or even $20 for the elegant ones sold at Anthropologie. But despite their beauty, I’ve found that those towels fall short… literally.

Many people (myself included) hang their dish towels from the oven door handle. It’s a convenient spot but not always the most practical. The problem is that every time little hands tug on them or you’re standing at the stove to make dinner, the towels fall to the floor. To solve this issue, I created my own dish towel that is both stylish and practical.

The towel is made from 100% cotton jersey that is super absorbent. I deconstructed two men’s T-shirts and used stenciling, reverse applique, and embroidery to create this look. I was inspired by techniques in Natalie Chanin’s Alabama Stitch book, but the design is entirely mine. A great thing about this project is that the sewing is so simple that even a beginner can do it — you don’t even need a sewing machine.

And thanks to two buttons at the top, the towel stays put, even if little hands pull on it. When it’s time to dry dishes, all I have to do is unbutton it and it’s ready to go.

Under $5 – Week 2

Craft #1 – Food Cozy - Kristin @ Pea Pod Creations

Need to get a meal to someone sick? Dinner to a family with a new baby?

Do you want your Brownies to be warm when you get to a party? Or maybe you need a housewarming gift?
…You need the food cozy

I love to make meals for those around me. I enjoy this simple act of service that can be accomplished even with a growing family at home.

This carrier was made for under $5.00 and can easily transport a meal from your house to another. This simple pattern was one of my great grandmother’s. So go raid the piggy bank and lets make this inexpensive project together.

Craft #2 – ABC Soup - Emily @ A Skrpbookmom’s Diary

My kids are all about letters and spelling these days. And what better way to help them out then by making them these fun fabric letters! They are so easy to make and your kids will have hours of entertainment! The best part that the whole set cost me under $5!!

In the winning tutorial, you will not only get directions on how to make them yourself, but you will get a download to the alphabet that I created by hand!! That way you can print them out at home or take them to your local copy store and make them yourself. Your kids will love them and maybe you’ll get a few minutes of free time while they spell away!

Craft #3 – ‘Heart Felt’ Button Covers
Corey @ Life With Little Ones

We take holidays pretty seriously around this house. I love dressing my children for the occasion but have found throughout the years that holiday apparel can not only be pricey but not always very cute. I decided to try something a little bit different for this Valentine’s Day and made a holiday accessory that can be added to the clothing that you already have. The hearts are made of felt and embroidery thread, with a hole cut into the middle. Simply slip the felt heart over a button and, voile! Ready to go!

These are perfect for little ones as well as older children. You can apply this idea to any color variation or shapes that you can imagine. The possibilities are endless… I am seeing little Pine trees for Christmas, Shamrocks for St. Patrick’s Day , even multi-colored eggs for Easter. What fun!

Why have the fun stop there? Add a few hearts to the laces of your favorite shoes too…

A perfect pairing!

Craft #4 – Springtime Skirt – Kim @ The Sassy Crafter

I don’t know about you, but I’m ready for spring! I’m itching to trade in my pants and sweaters for fresh, flirty skirts. ButI need to be a little more budget conscious this spring, and that’s where the springtime skirt comes in. Can you believe that it cost less than $5 to make?

pillowcase skirt
The secret is that it’s made from two thrift-store pillowcases! I’ve seen tutorials that tell you how to turn a single pillowcase into a skirt, but they’re always too slender for my hips. My solution was to piece together two pillowcases so that I had a skirt that fit both me and my budget.

pillowcase skirt
I think it’s going to be perfect for picnics in the park. I can’t wait!

Craft #5 – Suit Jacket Clutch - Linda @ Craftaholics Anonymous

This week I made a fabulous clutch from a $4 suit jacket that I got at a thrift store. I love that it is masculine, but yet feminine and very stylish. With so many different types of suit jackets out there, you can create tons of different one-of-a-kind clutches. And with this simple design, this clutch is a great project for beginning sewers as well as advanced sewers.

The coolest part is I was able to reuse different elements of the suit jacket to make this clutch. For the bottom of the clutch, I cut off a cuff and sewed it in place to give the bottom structure instead of using a plastic insert. The cuff worked perfectly! And for the lining, I used the coat’s silk lining for a smooth interior. I even used the naturally distressed buttons for an awesome accent.

Because I was able to reuse different parts of the jacket, the only other supply I needed was a magnetic snap, which after a coupon, was under $1.

This is my $4 beauty that got transformed.
Now the question is, where’s your man’s suit jacket? right ;)

Craft #6 – Clip What you Love – Jenny @ JennyGarland.com

This project is easy peasy and costs less than $5!
You simply clip what you love to the base that looks like this:

I clipped a picture of my cutie’s bum at the beach because it always makes me smile!

You could also clip your daily “to do list” or a sweet note.

This simple project would make a fantastic teacher or hostess gift! I leave mine on my desk for a splash of girly fun.

Craft #7 – On The Go Book – Kalleen @ At Second Street

Looking for something to keep your kids happy while on the go? Something you can pack along when you’re out shopping, at a restaurant, waiting at the doctors office or even driving in the car? I was. I was tired of handing over my iphone every time I needed entertainment on the go. I needed something fun and entertaining yet inexpensive and compact.

This personalized
On The Go Book will grab any kids attention.

Made of inexpensive felt, this book is just the right size to go in mom’s bag.

It comes with three activities:
Dress-up
Tic-Tac-Toe
and
Coloring

My kids love it, especially because they saw mom making making it just for them.

Craft #8 – Lovebirds’ Bookhouse – Sarah @ Create Studio

Librarians, turn your heads! For my “Under $5″ project I deconstructed a book to make a whimsical lovebird bookhouse… err, birdhouse.

But since lovebirds are happier in pairs, I splurged to make a companion birdhouse and hung them both above my favorite reading chair. These little lovebirds make the space so whimsical and inviting! Can’t you see these hanging in a child’s bedroom, playroom or in a sunroom? Make a set without the ribbon and these would be adorable bookends! I also love how the book pages came together in little hearts, very fitting for our lovebird pair!

Tweet Tweet!

Craft #9 – Huggies Clutch – Shannon @ Shannon Makes Stuff

Under $5.00 huh? I decided to grab a Huggie’s wipes case ($1.30), 2 pieces of felt ($0.40), 1/4 yard fabric ($1.00), 24 sheets of paper ($0.20), a magnet ($0.70), and some hot glue sticks ($0.40) and create a fabulous organizer/day planner/clutch.

As women on the go we are constantly checking our calendars, making to do lists, and unfortunately forgetting our keys. I wanted one fashionable item to help me out without feeling like I am carrying around my home, missing my appointments, and losing my brain along the way. So here you have it…

A Wipes Case Clutch.
Simply grab it and go. Slip it into your purse. Or hide it away in your glove box. However you roll, you won’t want to live another day without it!

Tucked away safely inside is a pen, a tear off calendar, a tear off to do list, your spare key (or gym key, or mailbox key, etc…) some emergency cash, and your business/credit/gift cards.

The winning tutorial will include directions on how to make the fabulous Wipes Case Clutch from start to finish, a pdf template for both the tear off calendar and Things I Need To Do pads, and the directions on how to make a tear off pad.

All that for $4.00. So slip that leftover $1.00 bill into your emergency cash holder, grab your clutch, and you’re good to go.
