Crocheted Nativity

What a whirlwind season it’s been. I have to admit to being sad to see it coming to a close. In this week’s final challenge, you selected Erica’s amazing crocheted nativity set as the winning project.

This is Erica’s fourth win.

Crocheted Nativity

This Crocheted Nativity Set is probably one of my favorite things that I have made. I really love the way it turned out.

Learn how to make this crocheted nativity set.
Crocheted Nativity Tutorial

When I was trying to think of what I could make for the finale of So You Think You’re Crafty I went back and forth on what kind of project I wanted to do. I thought about making some kind of quilt or something but every time I thought about it I kept coming back to crochet. I feel like although I enjoy sewing and doing other crafts, crocheting is the most representative of me and of my blog.

Paper Pinecone WreathWhew! Can you believe  I am a paper crafter at heart and this is my first paper project?!  Thanks for having me in the competition. Glad to be done and I gave it my ALL for sure this past month!

Project #2 Crocheted Nativity Set

I can’t believe it is the final week of the competition, I am so excited to still be here and to get to share my project with you today. I have had Christmas on my mind lately so since we could do anything we wanted to this week I decided to go with a Christmas project.

crocheted nativity in stable

I love nativity sets and wanted to make my own so I crocheted a set. My crocheted nativity includes Mary, Joseph, baby Jesus in a manger, a star, 2 shepherds, a sheep, and a donkey. I may add more pieces later but for now this is it.

I am excited to be able to set my nativity up in our house this year. One of the nicest things about it is that with little kids I am usually a little nervous to put out nativities but this one is made of yarn and stuffed so there really isn’t much they can do to hurt it.

Paper Cone WreathI really love the way that this turned out and I hope you do too.

Crocheted Advent Calendar

Handmade gift week is one of my favorite weeks of the entire year. All of our challengers entered fantastic projects and we share a load of fun semi-handmade gift ideas.

This week’s winner was Erica, with her Crocheted Advent Calendar. This is her third win and she moves on to the finals to face off with Holly.

Instead of making a gift this week, Erica concentrated her efforts on a gift delivery system.

Her kids love advent calendars. Christmas is such an exciting time of year and getting a little treat everyday makes it even more fun!

Her stockings are about 5 inches tall and about 2 1/2 inches across the top and they’re all different colors and designs. She used a total of 7 different colors of cotton yarn and made some stockings with thick stripes, thin stripes, dots, heels, toes and cuffs in different colors, etc!

Head on over to Erica’s blog and check out the full tutorial for her awesome Crocheted Stocking Advent Calendar.

Meet Virginia From Fynes Designs

A country girl to the core, Virginia lives in rural NS Canada with her husband and two children. She thrives on adding a splash of color to just about anything and works to be creative every day.

Fynes Designs Quote

Virginia has degrees in Animal Science and Interior Decorating, which are put to good use when planning projects for her blog. She also runs a small catering business from her home.

Interview with Virginia, Fynes Designs

When did you start crafting?

I started crafting at a very young age. The youngest of 10, I was often teased because I loved to cut, color and paste all day long, while the other kids were all out getting dirty.

I loved using old socks, toilet paper rolls, scraps of paper and yarn to create “beautiful” decorations, doll clothes and paper mache cats.

What’s your favorite medium to work with?

I love crafting with wood. I can rock a scroll saw and can cut a mean pattern. I make signs for a hobby and just built my first piece of furniture from scratch.

What’s your favorite thing to do (other than crafting, of course)?

I love hanging out with my sisters, hitting yard sales and antique stores and making blanket forts with my kids.

How do you stay organized?

Organization isn’t exactly my strong suit. I have a lot of Post-It notes, an AWESOME momma that helps me with just about anything I ask and kids that don’t mind eating super on top of my most recent product…the kitchen often gets turned into a craft room.

Who do you admire?

The first blog I started reading was The 36th Avenue. I still love everything about Desiree and her blog and was so excited to meet her at Snap Conference.

In addition, I really admire my two favorite Canadian bloggers – A Pretty Life in the Suburbs and Suburble. It’s a different world up here and I couldn’t do it without them.

Handmade Gifts | Season 18, Week Six

Welcome back to another exciting challenge on So You Think You’re Crafty. It’s the last week before our final round, when our two finalists will go head to head.

Handmade Gifts HeaderThis week our craters have done their level best to come up with a great handmade gift idea to share. Without further ado, let’s showcase the projects!

Handmade Gifts Challenge

Project #1 Crocheted Advent Calendar

For my gift project I decided to not do an actual gift, although you could give it as a gift, but instead a way of giving gifts.

Crocheted Mini Stocking Advent

I have been wanting to make a crocheted advent calendar for a long time and figured this was a perfect opportunity to do that. My kids love getting a little treat each day leading up to Christmas, it is like a little gift every day.

Crocheted Mini Stocking Advent

I made 24 little stockings, big enough to hold a few pieces of candy, in fun, bright colors and a variety of patterns.

Project #2 Glitter Candle Holders

You don’t have to spend a lot of money to create unique gifts that are thoughtful and make a beautiful statement. Most of the supplies needed to create these simple Glitter Candle Holders were items I already had on hand.

DIY Glitter Candle Holder

The glass candles are from the dollar store and are painted with Frosted Glass spray paint. A thin layer of Mod Podge was brushed  around the top and bottom of the glass and sprinkled with  gold and silver glitter.

To add a holiday touch, I used my Silhouette to cut out holiday shapes using metallic vinyl.

Project #3 Holiday Wrap and Packaging

This weeks theme was gifts and I struggled to think of something new and amazing to wow you all with.

DIY Holiday gift wrap and packaging ideas.

Instead I decided that I was going to focus on gift wrapping and packaging! I created all of these packages using just feathers cut from patterned cardstock on my silhouette, simple holiday sprigs, flowers and ornaments, plus some alphabet stamps and ink pads!

I attached them to various boxes and bags to create a variety of beautiful ways to give those special gifts!
