Voting is still open! {and thank you!!}

Hey guys!  Just wanted to drop in with two quick things.

First, the voting is still open!  Because of the problems we had with the poll (which turned out to be my fault due to some typo’s in the coding :\ ) I’ve decided to extend voting until tomorrow night.  And the results will be announced on Monday along with the new challenge.

So go vote!

And second,  Thank you so much for all the kind things you’ve emailed to me since my announcement on Wednesday.  I re-read the post yesterday and realized it was a pretty downer post.  Don’t worry!  I’m happy and I’m hopeful, I really am.  I was just trying to be realistic with you all about my thoughts on leaving.

And it’s not like I’ll be leaving the online world for ever – I’ve made too many friends and have too much fun here.  I will still have the 3 hours a day Abi is at preschool, and the nights that my husband works late to do my crafting (there’s no way I’d be able to just give that up).  So I’m still going to have my shop (that I’m still working on stocking with the stuff I already have made) and my other blog.

What’s great about them is that there isn’t always a deadline looming over my head during family time. There’s not a tight schedule that people are waiting on like there is here on SYTYC.  If I decide that I would rather go to the park than post the new cinnamon bread recipe I made, then I will go to the park and I won’t even spare a thought about that bread :)  It will allow me to focus on me and my family and I’m so excited!

A Happy/Sad Announcement about the future of SYTYC

I have been thinking about writing this post for a few months, since I returned home after our failed adoption placement to be exact. Then a few days ago I got some devastating news that made me start thinking harder.

But the last straw was yesterday afternoon when I was struggling to get our internet back up and running (I’m actually writing this from the library because the connection is still down). My little Abi came up behind me and in a very quiet voice said, “Mommy, please don’t do anymore work today. I really want to cuddle with you.” So I dropped everything and cuddled my sweet girl.

photo

It made me realize that although I feel I keep a pretty good work/life balance, Abi may see it differently. She will only be 4, then 5, then 6 once. And I may only be able to experience those ages with this one child, I may not get the chance to raise more.

As much as I have enjoyed running this blog and being inspired by all of you for the last 3 and a half years, there is one thing for sure.

If you were to ask the 5 year old me, the 15 year old me, or even the present day me what I wanted to be when I grow up my answer wouldn’t be blogger.

It would be mom.

But I can’t just let So You Think You’re Crafty die. It is what helped me out of my depression after my first miscarriage. It has been what I spent my quiet hours alone doing. It’s helped finance my fabric addiction and help out with bills when money was a little tight. And I think it’s a great, fun way to both be inspired and share inspiration.

So I’ve decided to sell the blog.

Don’t worry, everything will continue on as normal until I find someone that I think will take care of the contest, and probably even improve on it (because there sure is room for improvement :) ).

If you would like to send me an offer or get more information just send an email and I’ll get everything to you.

Interview with Kim @ Maiden D’Shade

profile
1.Tell us a little about you and your blog.
I’m an introvert. I’m very happy to be alone doing what I do. I think that’s why I enjoy blogging because it’s kind of “behind the scenes”. But even in the blogging world I’m not very outgoing. Doing this contest was somewhat out of my comfort zone, but it’s been fun. My favorite color is purple, which you’ll find in my bedroom, and my summer car is purple :)  I really like cars. I blog when I have something to share. But I also host a link party every week. It’s pretty low key, too. I just like to keep things simple!
2.How and when did you start crafting?
I don’t know when I started crafting. I think I have all my life, thanks to my Mother. A friend and I made a tie for our Math teacher in high school that had a real gold fish swimming inside it, because he wanted one. And who couldn’t use extra brownie points, right?
3.How often do you craft?
Certainly not as often as I’d like to. It’s usually when the need arises. I’m often asked to decorate for various functions. I tend to be crafty for those things. Sometimes I have a good idea for my home and craft then, too.
4.Where do you get your inspiration?
Often from others ideas. That’s usually what gets the wheels turning in my head. Sometimes I have my own idea and figuring out how to make it work through trial and error is what inspires me. I like troubleshooting.
5.What is your favorite medium to work in?
Probably wood. There’s so many things you can do with it and to it!
6.What is your guilty pleasure?
Thrift shopping.
7.What makes you smile?
My family.
8.What is your favorite thing to do (other than crafting)?
Watch movies at home!

Congrats again Kim!

Hey it’s me!  Missy, the host of this here SYTYC competition.  I have a weakness.  I love hair accessories.  Like, really like them.  And I also love wool felt.  Have you ever touched real wool felt? It’s like heaven. So I thought I’d throw the two together and make some adorable wool felt cuteness for babies. I started out just doing them as gifts for baby showers but I had so many people ask about them I decided to open an Etsy shop.  I had to close up shop for a few years while our family moved cross country multiple times (5 states in 5 years – goo) and got SYTYC up and going, but I’ve recently reopened for business under a new name, MissyDear Designs.  With the reopening I’ve added other materials, designs and sizes but I still think they’re adorable.  If I do say so myself.  And new things are added all the time!

Simply Homemade

$30 gift card to the Simply Handmade Shop

As a crafty busy mom of 5, my Etsy business is my way of feeding my frenzied fabric/craft supply addiction and getting my designs out of my head and into real life.

Simply Homemade actually started out as a cloth diaper shop but with the original name (Bitty Bumz) I realized there was no way to ever branch out so I started the painful process of re-naming, re-stocking, and re-designing. Now I can pretty much sell anything my little self feels like making including diapers. Currently it’s bags, clutches, and earrings but I have plans to eventually sell patterns and kits for the DIYer! For those of you who love originality, I’m working on the “design your own bag” listing. Choose your favorite strap, body, flap, hardware, and fabrics to create a one of a kind bag. I’m really excited for this one!

I take great pride in my work and I always take the extra time to offer well made products. I love sending my handiwork out into the world to be loved by someone new and I’m really excited to have the opportunity of sponsoring this season of SYTYC. Missy is one of the sweetest and most wonderful ladies to work with so I appreciate her willingness to let me on as a sponsor. Good luck to all the amazing ladies this season!!

Interview with Catherine @ CathGrace

Catherine had a great run this season and came out as the “fan favorite” with the most weekly wins. Congrats!  Here is her interview and some of her projects from the season.

me in the snow (1)

1.Tell us a little about you and your blog.

Hi! My name is Catherine Griffith, and I blog over at www.cathgrace.com. My blog is made up of sewing, furniture refinishing, decorating, and various other crafts as the mood strikes me! I grew up with an amazing mom who turned us loose on all of her crafting supplies, so there is not much out there that I haven’t tried from wood burning to scherenschnitte. I currently live in South Korea with my husband and two children, where he works for the USAF, and I occasionally substitute teach at my kid’s middle school.

2.How and when did you start crafting?

I have crafted my whole life, I come from a family of creative people, with a Gramma who sews professionally, a Grandpa who was a carpenter, and a mom who encouraged us to express ourselves in any way that occurred to us. I started off sewing with a stapler – my uncle worked for a car seat cover factory, so he would bring home scraps of faux fur and polyester knit fabric (always in beige, navy, hunter green, or gray) and I would make elaborate fashions for my sister and I to wear to dinner each night, but since my mom didn’t want me using her sewing machine by myself, I used a stapler. :) Next I moved on to elaborate Barbie clothes, before being taken under my Gramma’s wing and taught to sew “perfectly” (or I was stink’n unpicking it.)

3.How often do you craft?

I make at least one or two things everyday. Actually, only about 10% of what I make ends up on the blog because I get too impatient to document everything. My hands are always busy making something and I lay awake at night thinking of things I want to make and do.

4.Where do you get your inspiration?

I love beautiful things, and functionality. If I see a need I like to fill it in a way that improves my family’s quality of life, even if that is only with something I think is beautiful. My family moves every 3-4 years, so making traditions and things that create a sense of “home” and continuity for my family is very important to me. I go on Pinterest a little, and I follow some great blogs, too. ( I also LOVE to knock-off Anthropologie clothes!) One of the biggest needs I see is age appropriate clothing for little girls over the age of 10, stores think you suddenly want your child to dress like a teenager as soon as they hit double digits, and I am constantly questing after modest, classy, age appropriate little girl’s clothes, but not anything babyish.

5.What is your favorite medium to work in?

Fabric, I am first and foremost a seamstress.

6.What is your guilty pleasure?

I listen to a lot of TV, and I am not ashamed of it! (which I am pretty sure appalls my mom) I don’t do any reality TV because it all irritates me, but I love the history channel, and anything educational, so I can potentially glean something of value while I sew and do other things. (That being said, I used to listen to the Home Shopping Network a lot when we lived in the US, that way I could hear voices without really having to listen, and I feel less alone through out the day, so not so educational after all…….) I just discovered Walking Dead and Downton Abby, and could watch those all day too.

7.What makes you smile?

Watching my children turn into distinct people. They are constantly learning and growing, and I feel like I see the world freshly through watching them experience things and react for the first time.

8.What is your favorite thing to do (other than crafting)?

I am a passionate traveler, if I could spend the rest of my life seeing the world with my family I would be happy! I have been on all but 2 continents, and I want to see all the still existing wonders of the world before I die.
