Interview with Sarah @ Sara vs. Sarah

1. Tell us a little about you and your blog.

I live in the desert with two beagles and a fat, grey cat. Two of the three bedrooms in my house have
been turned over to creative endeavors, as have many parts of the rest of the house. I just love to make
things. Still, it never occurred to me to do a blog. It was Sara, my blogging partner, who talked me into
it. We started out the blog as a craft competition against each other hence Sara vs. Sarah. We were
doing biweekly challenges, but we’ve moved away from that in recent months. Sara is currently on
hiatus and I’m doing the blog on my own for the time being.

2. How and when did you start crafting?

You could say I was born with a pair of knitting needles in my hands (which wasn’t too comfortable for
my poor mom). I’ve been crafting so long that I can’t remember starting. I do know that I sewed my
first garment when I was 5 years old. It was 1971 and I made a purple paisley halter top. I was very
proud of it until one day when I was holding a tame raccoon at my grandpa’s farm and the raccoon
pooped on it. I never wore it again. I was lucky to have a mom who was darn patient with teaching me
new crafty skills; she was lucky to have a kid who was a pretty quick study.

3. How often do you craft?

I’m a daily crafter. Sometimes that means mindlessly knitting dishrags in front of the TV. Sometimes it
means making grand quilts that have a couple hundred hours of work in them. I need to keep my hands
busy.

4. Where do you get your inspiration?

Inspiration, for me, can come from anywhere. I might be walking through the grocery store, driving
home from work, watching TV, doing some other craft . . . ideas just pop into my head. With that said,
I have a HUGE collection of vintage craft books and magazines that I do turn to get the creative juices
flowing (and to aggravate my allergies since many are quite musty).

5. What is your favorite medium to work in?

Are thrift store finds considered a medium? Well, let’s say so. I love to work with stuff I find at the local
Goodwill. You never know what treasure you’re going to come up with and what you can do with it. I
would say that 75% of the stuff I craft with comes from the thrift store.

6. What is your guilty pleasure?

Are thrift stores a guilty pleasure? I really do love thrift stores. It’s funny because I loathe any other sort

of shopping, but I love going to the thrift store. It’s the treasure hunt aspect of it that I love. You just
don’t know what you will find. Do I really feel guilty about it? Well, when I come home with yet another
piece of vintage Pyrex to add to the dozens of other pieces of vintage Pyrex I already have, then yes, I
feel a little guilty.

7. What makes you smile?

My beagle, Little Ruthann, never fails to make me smile when she comes running up to me with her tail
wagging and her ears flopping around. She is so cute.

8. What is your favorite thing to do (other than crafting)?

I’d like to say something classy sounding like being outdoors or spending time with my family, but the
truth is, it’s either eating or watching TV. I’ve got the couch potato thing down to a science; it’s just that
my version includes knitting needles.
