Interview with Meredith @ My Magic Mom

1.Tell us a little about you and your blog.

I am an RN that left my job once my husband and I started our family. I now have the privilege of staying home with our 3 girls. The kids–who are currently 7, 6 and almost 5–keep us pretty busy. I started my blog back in 2008 as a way for me to keep a collection of fun stuff I found to do with the girls, which is why I named it My Magic Mom. I later found that I was bored with the blog and I knew others would be as well, so I began posting about stuff I enjoy, projects I make and activities we do as a family. From time to time I throw in stories of our girls. They make us laugh on a daily basis.

2.How and when did you start crafting?

Both of my parents have crafty talent. My mom sews, quilts, etc while my dad enjoys building furniture and stuff from wood. My mom must have passed the love of fabric on to my sister and me. I wish I paid better attention to the sewing lessons from my mom when I was young though. Many times over the years I have had to call her to get me out of a crafting jam, like the time I was making a pair of shorts and ended up cutting and sewing 2 right legs and no left leg. I don’t remember a time in my life that didn’t involve some type of crafting. I had a cool weaving loom when I was young, I sewed on my mom’s sewing machine and I had all sorts of art supplies and projects such as shrinky dinks, perler beads and those things where you put different colored material in sections of a template and bake them to melt the stuff to to make sun catchers…remember those?

3.How often do you craft?

I tend to craft more in my head these days. I don’t get all the crafting time I would like. My brain is a busy place with all the crafting and sewing ideas! I craft most often while the girls are in school and once they go to bed at night. Other times we make crafts together since they seem to have the crafting bug too.

4.Where do you get your inspiration?

I get inspiration from all over. Magazines, blogs, tv, catalogs, nature, shopping and from my kids. I also love going to the bookstore and flipping through books.

5.What is your favorite medium to work in?

I’m not sure I have a favorite. I like so many different types of projects and that also makes having a blog difficult because there is no niche. I’m nicheless. I really enjoy sewing, cooking, painting, writing, photography, etc. I never sit still long enough to become proficient in any one subject, so I’m definitely not an expert in anything. I get sidetracked easily and have too many unfinished projects.

6.What is your guilty pleasure?

Hmmm…my guilty pleasure…probably eating out. Mexican food is a family favorite. And Dr Pepper. I’m trying to not drink so much these days.

7.What makes you smile?

My family. Even on my most stressful days, my husband and children make me laugh and I’m a happy woman. I feel lucky and blessed.

8.What is your favorite thing to do (other than crafting)?

Spending time with my family (especially while on vacation) tops my list, but I also love reading and shopping!

Meredith – Your projects are all so awesome! And the most important “specialty” you have perfected is that of being a MOM! There is no better job in the world. Enjoy every moment with your girls because before you know it, you’ll be like me – with my youngest, the twins, just turning 21!! I love to hear that you do crafts with them – those are days they will never forget. I am so fortunate now to have Tayler living with us now while her Mom serves in the Army – she just turned 5. She has lived here the majority of her little life and I so wish I could have a “do-over” with my own. Make sure to slow down and enjoy the silly little moments. One bit of advice – those dirty dishes, messy floors and pile of laundry won’t ever go away on their own, but once you lose a minute of fun with the kids, it’s Gone! Enjoy and congratulations on all your beautiful work!
