Interview with Alicia @ The Creative Vault

  1. Tell us a little about you and your blog.
I started my blog last year when I realized that I was keeping too many secrets in regards to the things I was creating.  People would treat the things I made as some sort of mystery and say “How did you do that?” or “I could never do that!”.  I knew that it was time for me to “unlock the vault” and share how I create things so that everyone could feel like they could create them too.  Because they totally can!

My blog has a little of everything on it from sewing to wood and paper crafts, crafting for boys & girls, things for grown-ups, inspiration, recipes and how to tips.  If there is something that I’ve created or felt inspired by it will eventually make its way to The Creative Vault and I’ll teach you how it was done.

  2. How and when did you start crafting?
I have a very creative mother who taught me everything she knows.  I’ve been creating with her since I was a little girl.  I was in 4-H as a kid and my “summer job” every year was to enter my crafts and food in the fair.   One of my first sewing projects was from the 3rd grade when I sewed a glorious pair of fluorescent paint splatter “Hammer Pants” and a reversible top.  I’m sure you can imagine it’s gloriousness! Ha!

I took a break from crafting in my teenage years because I was too busy or cool {I don’t really remember the reason} but I picked it up again when I found myself unemployed and depressed one summer in college. I rented a sewing machine from the University and have been sewing and crafting ever since.

  3. How often do you craft?
Every day.  I have the ability to pick up something work on it for 5 or 10 minutes, put it down, pick it up later and work on it some more.  It’s a skill that comes in handy and I’m able to squeeze crafts into my free time no matter how little of it I have.

  4. Where do you get your inspiration?
I mostly get the inspiration from the materials that I work with.  I like to take a piece of fabric or a piece of junk and hold it and think about it and essentially let it tell me what it should be.

I also get inspiration from my children and their personalities, from living in Alabama and of course from Pinterest.  You can follow me and my ridiculous number of pins HERE.

  5. What is your favorite medium to work in?
Probably fabric but I also love wood.
  6. What is your guilty pleasure?
Hot sauce.  I love it on everything.  Tapatio is my favorite but really I love it all.
  7. What makes you smile?
My family of course!  You can’t help but smile when you have one kid jumping on the couch in her swimsuit singing and dancing all day and another picking up all the toys, cups and clothes laying on the floor and dumping them ALL in the kitchen sink because he just wants to make momma proud.
  8. What is your favorite thing to do (other than crafting)?
I love cooking, watching TV with my husband, read teen novels, spend time with my kids and talk to my family on the phone I talk to my mom, dad and brothers nearly every day.
