Bessie was our winner of Season 9 of SYTYC and she is fantastic! Her’s a little bit to help you get to know her better!
1.Tell us a little about you and your blog.
I’m Bessie, Mama to four darling girls, wife to Danny. We live in a rural town, in a little white house with a picket fence, hollyhocks, daisies and chickens. I try to embrace a simple life; sewing, gardening, preserving, painting, writing and teaching my daughters these old fashioned arts along the way.
2.How and when did you start crafting?
My mother would host her own open house each year. Hundreds of guests would arrive to purchase her handmade wares. I started crafting when I was just a little girl, helping her to create all of her designs.
3.How often do you craft?
I think there is this misconception about people who craft. Sometimes people look at something I’ve made and say, “How do you have the time to do this?” or my favorite, “You know they sell those at the store.” Well, I’ll tell ya, I don’t sew or craft because I have time on my hands J I do it because I just need to. I love to make things, whether it be from fabric, clay, or repourposed old vintage junk. I try to do or make something creative each day, whether it be for myself, my shop or with my children.
4.Where do you get your inspiration?
Everywhere, nature, vintage textiles, Art Doll Quarterly, the Tea catalog – I love their clothing.
5.What is your favorite medium to work in?
Mostly textiles, new and vintage. Though somedays I wake up with the urge to cover the table with brown paper and break out the PaperClay!
6.What is your guilty pleasure?
Buying new fabric. And Tiramisu.
7.What makes you smile?
Danny, when he comes home from work. My girlies, when they squeeze me tight, pick me flowers or a handful of raspberries. The Ocean.
8.What is your favorite thing to do (other than crafting)?
Christmas shopping, date nights and relaxing with a cup of chamomile tea.
