Interview with Holly @ Domestic Dork
by Missy on June 29, 2011
1.Tell us a little about you and your blog.
My blog, Domestic Dork, began in spring 2008 as a simple family blog to keep our long distance family members apprised of the details of our life. But I love to write, and soon found that I wanted to make my blog something more. The title comes not only from my love for domestic hobbies, such as sewing and baking, but my total inability to stay on top of domestic basics (hence, the catch phrase “my dust bunnies are breeding”)
2.How and when did you start crafting?
I’d say I began crafting in earnest when I was five, usually with crayons, glue, clothespins &macaroni, that sort of thing. Really though, I’ve always been making something. A lot of my “crafting” time has been devoted to the fine arts, painting, drawing, ceramics. But I’ve added sewing, digital design, cake decorating, and a number of more “practical” craft hobbies to the mix over the years. I’m a Jane of all trades, master of none.
3.How often do you craft?
Daily. I made it a goal for 2011 to sew every single day, even if only for a minute. I’ve missed one day so far. I do more than sew of course. I regularly do digital crafting, such as digital illustrations, and photo storyboards.
4.Where do you get your inspiration?
My MiniDork inspires a lot of my craft ideas. I love to make things for her to play with, as well as decor for her room. Seeing the excitement on her face when presented with a gift that Mama made makes every minute spent crafting (and every minute spent cursing at the project) totally worth it.
5.What is your favorite medium to work in?
Sewing probably gives me the greatest sense of accomplishment. There is nothing like seeing your kid wear an outfit you made. But I’m most proficient with pencil/paper and paint/canvas or my computer. I love to create digital projects (and, bonus! there’s no mess involved).
6.What is your guilty pleasure?
Pie.
7.What makes you smile?
Knowing that Target is coming to Canada.
8.What is your favorite thing to do (other than crafting)?
I love to read and write. I also enjoy singing, watching movies, and beating ManDork when we play games.
